We Started in a Bar!
The Journey was founded in Aberdeen, South Dakota as a church plant (Don't worry, we've been watered!). We had our first meeting on September 24, 2006. Yeah, we're old...
Why did you start?
A few people thought that Aberdeen needed something new. Our founding members believed that there are people in local communities, our friends and neighbors, who have not experienced the relevance and love of God. The Journey was set in motion to love the people that get overlooked and commonly not loved by society.
Why Aberdeen, South Dakota?
The group decided to start their journey in Aberdeen because of the amount of connections they had already made with its people and the community. The resources were in place and God provided everything they needed to be successful Loving God, and Loving People.
What do you mean, you met in a bar?
The Journey started meeting at a local mainstreet sports bar. We felt that the environment of a bar allows people to feel comfortable in a situation that they may not always feel comfortable in. It was, and still is, important to us to create a new environment for people to experience the love and grace of God. Whether we meet in a bar, lodge, church, park, car, or campground we believe "church" is about the people not the building.
