There is a secular song by John Mayer, entitled "Waitin' On The World To Change." I really like the song. In fact, I've covered it a couple of times. It has an interesting message that there is a select few who are waitin' on the world to change its views, the way it thinks. Last week I took an 18 hour drive, Aberdeen, SD to Dallas, TX, and this song came on the radio. (By the way the drive was really fun...NOT) I was jammin' out and it got me thinking. I am a believer in Christ, one in which worshiping God is a natural and truly awesome experience, but what am I waitin' for?
I don't know if many people have noticed this but I sure have. There are tons of worship songs that use nature to explain the awesomeness of God. It isn't limited to those songs but the Psalms are almost entirely considered songs of praise to God and they use nature too. On to my observation, I think it is interesting how we, humans, use God's creation to explain his qualities. Whether it's the mountains, the ocean depths, the vast sky, animals, plants, all of them ascribe qualities based on his own creation. It seems unoriginal, almost as if we are cheapening who/what God is. It's like saying to the cake decorator, "Hey you are as beautiful as a three teared, wedding cake." Does it lessen the praise we give Him?
Last weekend the band played a song by Misty Edwards called Favorite One. It is a super powerful tune. It is also really easy (if you want the chords just email me!). I wanted to take a second and talk about the lyrics, so I have posted them below.
Jesus, here I am Your favorite one.
What are you thinking? What are you feeling? I have to know.
For I'm after Your heart, after Your heart, after You.
A lot of people have a lot of different perceptions of what worship is. There are countless books that have been written, heck, that will be written about the topic. I think there are two things we need to remember about worship. 1) There is a specific description all over the Bible. 2) True worship will be different for different people.
1) What does the Bible say about worship? The Bible has references all over about the necessity of worship. It is in the Old Testament (OT) and the New Testament (NT). So what does it have to say? Well, first keep in mind, in the OT people had to do a whole lot to be "okay" with God. In the NT Jesus came to make us right in the eyes of the one who judges...out of love remember. Here are some things that I found the other day while hunting for verses: (P.S. there are over 490 verses that I found. Here are only three of them!)
